Ray Wilson's soundlab might be just what you're looking for, although it 
uses lots o' IC's....

I don't know of any discrete VCO's (old Minimoog designs?) but you can 
find discrete VCA's, VCFs etc on the web all over.

Starter info: well, I don't know how "starter" it is, but this book has 
good info on the basics of designing all the core modules:
