Aha! Good point.  The evolution sounds smooth because as each new pulse is 
added to the signal it starts out very narrow (low energy), widens and then 
narrows again.  You may want to draw some pictures to understand this.  So 
the shaper gives a huge range of spectral variation, with interesting phase 
changes, but the sweep sounds quite smooth.
