thanks to steve ridley:

in the original simmons design, the decay capacitor doesn't get fully 
charged at short decay times, dramatically reducing the volume of tighter 
percussion sounds. by inserting an emitter follower, the problem is 
corrected.

1. remove d4

2. connect the base of a npn transistor (i used 2n4401) to ic5 pin 8 (output 
of trigger extracter).

3. connect collector of npn to +5v (i used ic5 pin 4).

4. connect emitter of npn through a 10 ohm resistor to + side of c3.

voila, snappy envelopes (finally)!
