He is a generally great guy. When Hal was around Cal Arts, he hadn't
'broken'. yet. I think his career went nuts when he collaborated with Eno
and those guys, yes? He stayed to himself, there wasn't a lot of activity
from him (for instance, Mort was always doing events and Barry Schrader had
the Scream and Theater Vanguard concert series-es (what's the plural of
series?)). Budd was just there writing and working with grad students. I
appreciated his music a lot because back then, it's was considered
minimalism, later re-coined as ambient, and a refreshing counterpoint to the
trick-per-second stuff everyone else was doing there.
Any of you out there who appreciate Harold Budd should consider the music of
Chas Smith. Hal was Smith's mentor at Cal Arts and Chas' stuff is right up
Budd's ally - very fascinating. Home made instruments which are masteful
works of art, both visually and sonically. Here's one of them:
