Actually, linear VCOs can have a keyboard with fixed resistors (Korg MS series do just
that)...
the "pot per key" approach would be necessary only for those VCO that have totally
unusable
linearity... In the case of some exotic designs (like simple tube oscillators) this might
be the
only way to go... but for solid state designs its not necessary.
Since there are so many GOOD VCo designs that are stable over a wide range, either linear
or
expo... why go the tough route ?
If you want to experiment with micro-tunings... then the pot-per-key is a viable
solution... but those would not be trimmers
