Yes, Glen.  That is exactly what it is.  It's simply velocity.  The term 
"initial touch" is used instead of the word "velocity", not so much to try to make 
it sound more snazzy, but rather to make the whole velocity concept more 
readily understood by non-geeks.  That is, non-professional customers who buy 
digital pianos, organs, and home keyboards.  The words "velocity sensing keyboard" 
do not immediately suggest to the neophyte customer what the keyboard 
actually does, except maybe if he's also a student of Newtonian physics.  That's why 
those markets usually refer to a velocity sensing keyboard as being "touch 
sensitive".  They end up having to use the rather awkward words "initial touch" 
in order to differentiate that function with aftertouch.

BTW  --  I love that word.  Aftertouch.  A totally fabricated word, but a perf
ect one.  I wonder if it has gone legit and appeared in any major 
dictionaries?
