It'e embarrassling simple. I feed 15V through a resistor then through the
batteries in series. Positive from the supply to positive of the cells of
course. The resistor needs to be in the area of 1k to 10k. 10k is quite
safe, and you can forget the batteries for hours. At 1k, I'd keep checking
them regularly for any temperature rise. If the cells bulge a little, you
are going too fast. If you forget them, they can go "pop" :)

Not with Alkaline, no. They have a special method, but it can be done. Try
searching the internet.
