The dimensions aren't what you want but can be changed, of course. Upgrades in
quality (and cost) would be to use plywood and lay some Masonite on top as
suggested earlier. Instead of plywood, MDF is even better. But the dust from
cutting it is very fine and goes everywhere. I'd also add a shelf on top along
the back. Great to keep instruments & tools off the bench surface. And Harry
Bissell's suggestion to add a layer of grounded sheet metal under the Masonite
is a slick trick.
Frankly, I like the door idea better. Hey, I use a door myself. A great
assortment of dimensions are already cut for you. No need to support it in the
middle. Just add legs (filing cabinets, saw horses, etc) at the ends. You're in
business pretty quickly.
