[sdiy] carry-on minisynth

I specifically made my synth so that it meets the size requirements for carry on luggage. No problem with bring it on the plane, just some questions and looks. This is of course pre-9/11. Have not tried since.
Pre-9/11 I was boarding with my synth. Security made me open it up and remove the front panel so they could see inside. They then took it over to some special station. Rubbed a wand all over it and then placed the tip of the wand into a machine. They were screening it for traces of nitrates. (useful for many things including bombs)
Just as I realize they were screening my synth for nitrates I remembered playing a show 4 months earlier that involved a lot of fireworks. Some of the firecrackers landed on my synth and actually made it into the innards, it was covered with residue. I figured they were going to freak out when they get their first positive since they trained on the machine. But the analyzer did not discover any substances to concern them.

Subject: [sdiy] carry-on minisynth
hi,
this is a question for anyone who has flown in the
states with homemade synth equipment in their carry-on
luggage. i'm playing a small west coast tour and will
be flying from portland to LA and don't trust the
baggage handlers with anything fragile. my concern is
maybe a bit paranoid, but is there any risk of my
equipment getting confiscated or me not being allowed
to board? i know bombs probably look pretty different
than synths, but... anyone have any stories or advice?
thanks a lot.
