I've built that Radio Shack "reverb" project about 20 years ago.
I have wrapped it in a NE572, gave the low pass filter a sharper cutoff 
and it did sound pretty decent.
In fact, I still have an SAD-1024 in it's unopened Radio Shack packaging 
w/datasheet that I was going to build another unit with...
Well, I'm glad I waited - This list is giving me all sorts of ideas ( -:
