I don't know the history of BBDs, but considering that they are essentially a long row of 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, or even 8000 capacitors in a row, I don't think that you'll see them in a discrete form any time soon.  That said, I suppose it's possible... kinda like walking barefoot on broken glass is possible...
