[sdiy] Damned amplifier

Hi, I am back on this list after one year off.
Now that my 2 amplifers are fixed i would like to thanks all the people who
shared their experiences last year, and specially Glen Berry who found the
exact problem.
On both of my amplifiers the relays had some bad contacts. On the Sony TA-AX3
(an old silver piece of shit probably) the relay was transparent so i had
little to do to get off the top of the relay with a tool and clean up the
contacts. Bingo !
It was the exact same story with the SAMSON SERVO 150 wich has much more value
for me since i use it to drive my Tannoy Reveal. The relay was not
transparent but i managed to guess where the contacts were and at my surprise
the plastic cover was easy to scratch off. After some cleaning the amplifier
showed a perfect behavior and i use it every day now.

Well it was just some feedback about this because i think that other people
may face a similar problem.

Cheers,

Linium

Do the amplifiers use relays to delay the amplifier´s connection to
speakers, as a means of preventing ´´turn-on thump´´? If so, these relays can
develop poor connections and cause problems similar to what you describe.
They can also cause crossover distortion.

Glen Berry
