Since the oscillators are not reset by gate=1 (only the EG is), you can
apply any envelope by setting a=d=r=0 and repeatedly updating the sustain
register while flipping the gate bit. The sustain register, of course, has
only a resolution of 4 bits, but you may be able to extend that range by
switching between adjacent values (interpolating) playing tricks with a/r
settings.

At least fading out using the sustain register works nicely as e.g. the
title music of Wizball shows.
