That would probably have been an old Steiner EVI (Electronic Valve 
Instrument).  It's a little wind-controlled analog synth that was manufactred by Crumar 
in the early 1980's.  Nyle Steiner later redesigned it as a MIDI controller 
and that instrment was made and sold by Akai.  Akai also made a "sax" version of 
it called the EWI.  EVI's are much more rare than EWI's these days.
