[sdiy] which oscilloscope?

Those Web-tronics oscilloscopes are not dependable.  I speak from
experience.  My first one crapped out just under the warranty period.  The
replacement they sent went out in another year, apparently a bad tube this
time.  I doubt this scope ever met its stated specifications, for instance,
the display always dimmed at higher sweep rates.  

 

I settled for a used Tektronix scope off ebay.  You take your chances here
too.  Anything affordable is generally an older model with risk of failure.
But at least these name brand units (Tektronix, HP, LeCroy, Philips) are
better built.

So, what are some of the recommendations for someone getting into DIY and
wanting/needing a scope. I guess my general feel with equipment is that I'd
rather buy once and be done even if it means laying out more cash and having
some growing pains at first as I'm flooded with more options then I may
need. I've poked around on ebay and there seems some pretty reasonable deals
but I really don't know what I'm looking at. Recommendations?
