[sdiy] pioneering electronics, Siemens-slightly OT

After WWII, surplus parts could be had for pennies on the dollar. Things
like Plexiglas domes could be had for less than $10. At that time a very
exotic material, Plexiglas sheets and curved sections were used in fighter
windshields and hemispherical 'bubbles' were used in windshields that
covered the gunners in the B-29 bomber. Some originally cost over $1000 and
remember this is in 1940's dollars. Anyway, a LOT of these parts found their
way into the prop departments at the movie studios and could be seen
populating the sets of war and sci-fi movies well into the 70's. Many of the
pieces used for detailing the sets of Star Wars came from war surplus yards.
