Whether this is C-Style or HTML-Style does not matter.
A trained person (read: programmer) is able to read both
fluently, and a mere mortal will think both notations suck.

But ANY thing that has to be machine-readable without enormous
work for te parsing will need special characters, sequences and
formatting rules that can be interpreted by a simple parser,
and errors can be recognized.
Thnak god that most people (and programs) use readable ASCII
characters in the meantime, and not strange <ESC> or other
nonprontable sequences now...
