I saw a clever solution on the Hohner RD500, an early digital
reverb/delay unit. Basically it's one knob but two pots. Normally you
turn the "fine" pot, but when you reach the limit you can turn the knob
further with a little more torque: then the "coarse" pot is turned.
This was used for the delay time setting, the absolute value was
displayed on a three-digit 7-segment in milliseconds. You could dial in
any value quickly and easily. I liked this much better than the usual
endless-knob/"mouse accelerator"-approach.
This could be DIYed too. Just mount the "fine" pot on the axis of the
"coarse" pot. Use a pot that requires a higher torque as "coarse" pot.
