The reason I don't recommend it (although you would get away with it 99% of
 the time) is that the outputs might be at very low impedance, so high 
currents could flow from one to another, and fry one. Even though any effect
unit should be able to stand a direct short on the output, imagine that an
effect that can put out a peak of 10v has its output connected to the output 
of a unit that runs at 5v max inside. Then the 5v unit might see a higher 
voltage across its output than the output stage is being run from, and it is
possible (though unlikely) that damage might occur.

Unlikely I know, but my CR68 fell victim to a lightning strike recently, so 
now I have a different feeling regarding 'unlikely' ;D

Incidentally , many home stereo amps have died from having their outputs
accidentally or deliberately connected together.
