Why not use two subs in a binaural configuration. Then you won't detect
variations in local SPL. If the sepakers that you have are limited in terms
of excursion that does not mean that they can't produce low freq. sound
right? So place them in a fully stuffed box with a big port and have fun.
That will provide the dampening you need and still allow in-phase air
movement at the port.

Did you try a loud pure sine sweep? How does it sound?
Did you try two pure sine tones, moving arround
and doing intermodulation?

Can happen in electronic music.

The number of inches says nothing about the quality of the driver.
Certainly a 30" membrane will be difficult to control.
