Thank you all for the information!  

Already, I can see that I've been missing one thing - having the small cap in
parallel with the electrolytics on power entry.  I've been following Jim
Patchell's example of bypassing the chips with .1 uF ceramics, but I missed that.
 I was fairly sure what to expect if the value of the electrolytics was too
small, but clueless about if one went overboard and made them too large.  I was
certainly oblivious to the inductance/resistance issues, too.  I've still got a
lot to digest from the posts and the links - thanks Harry, Phillip, Martin, and
Oren.

It's been said before, and I'll say it again - this list rocks!
