[sdiy] another amusement from goldmine

When I ordered my LM13600s, I risked an extra $15.75 on their "10 Note Sound
Kit". The description reads: "Make robot sounds, computer effects, etc.
Synthesizer features 10 adjustable notes, variable pitch and speed..."
Sounded like it had some noize potential, and the price was worth a gamble.

Turns out to be a straightforward litte gizmo: a 555 clock running into a
4017 counter; each of the 10 steps from the counter goes thru a trim pot;
and the resulting voltages are then fed as a cv to another 555 oscillator.
Even has a "glide" switch to slur between notes. At first I thought I could
maybe tweak this into a poor mans sequencer, so I built it up into a project
box, swapping out the trimmer pots for panel mounts from the junk box. Also
added a range switch to the clock to take it up into audio frequencies.

Anyway, it's a little too flaky to be any use as a sequencer... among other
things, the 10 pots are all tied together on one end, so they interact. But
its a fun little noizemaker on its own, especially when the clocked at
extreme low or high rates. I also added a tap of the control voltage, and
fed that to my blacet vco... now we're cookin!

I'd recommend it as a evening's project, especially for my fellow beginner
diyers...

cheers,

lbd
