Velodyne is able to get amazing low end from a 10" driver in a 1 cubic foot
box, although it is done with active electronics and servo feedback.
Distortion is below 1% THD. Servo-controlled subwoofers rock! Anyway, my
point is that good low end does not require 18" drivers. I've seen small
bass drivers with Fs in the 20-25Hz range.
 
Do you live in a house? The attic is a pretty large enclosure, if you don't
mind ceiling-mounted subwoofers. (Higher Spouse Acceptance Factor than huge
bass bins!) This would work more like an infinite baffle than a sealed box,
so your current drivers may not like it.
