Another alternative: how much current does the 
preamp require?  If it's not much, you might
be able to get away with building a 48V supply
and using a voltage divider to knock a tap
down to 24V to power the preamp.  You'd have
to use power resistors, and the obtainable current
would probably be limited to about 0.1 amp.
