[sdiy] semi ot: electrolytics / bomb ?

Years ago, after having built a power supply and put the caps in
BACKWARDS, I learned to first time power things like this as follows:

Get the longest extension cord you have, mine is 100 feet.  With
the device not plugged in, turn it's power switch to ON.  Then plug
the device into the extension cord (the other end is NOT yet
plugged into the wall socket).  Drag the other end of the extension
cord into ANOTHER ROOM and plug it in.  If there's no nasty noise
such as BAM, or Fzzzsht, after a short time, it probably won't. 
Have the device withing visible range and have the fire
extinguisher ready just in case...
