  Like this:

              470 ohm ~ 1K
 I/O pin]--+--/\/\----------< to whatever
          _|_
          /_\
           | anode
           |
          gnd

  The idea is to limit the diode current if the negative input voltage 
gets too large for the diode to clamp without burning out.
