Hi,
I'm reading Axelson's book, it's pretty good.
Looks like DLP Design is the same deal as FTDI: virtual COM port
driver or use a custom library...

For learning the innards of USB, I recommend the book
"USB Complete" by by Jan Axelson.
Have you checked out DLP Design? Someone on the list
turned me on to them. They have a product that
interfaces to a uP and handles USB. It is cheap but
limited to 1 channel and operates in FIFO mode; all
you can do is send a byte stream to the target.
