I like the subframe idea, it's versatile but yeah, it's more metal to bend.
How about just mount the pots to a nice thick PCB and then use standoffs to
firmly anchor the PCB to the main panel? The advantage here is that you can
also use this to minimize the amount of panel wiring. If you do it right,
you can end up with just a single ribbon cable going from the panel PCB to
the main board. Downside is that you've got to lay out another PCB.
