You might look into what Jim Williams from Audio Upgrades does.  He's been
known to rework various gear for better audio performance, usually by
undoing things that we're done as cost savers to begin with: adding more
supply decoupling, low-offset opamps & the removal of signal-path coupling
caps...nothing a motivated DIY-er couldn't do for themselves.
