well.. ehm.. maybe they DID succeed. but some of you didn't realize it..;-)
they at least succeeded one way: they made pop music with synthesizers
acceptable to the masses. it's not that long ago that a synth was seen by
the public either as a weird noise machine or a way to 'cheat'. now i'm not
saying they are the only ones responsible. but a lot of early electronic
music, even things like tangerine dream, were still for a select audience.
i've always believed that today's dance music scene are the direct
descendants of that 60's academic synth world. and i'm not talking about the
trancey chart toppers, but the real visionary producers who continue to
cross the boundaries. it's a form of electronc music with mass appeal. i
believe it's the academic side that has 'lost the plot' so to speak, with a
lot of irrelevant, unlistenable sound that is not even music.
but we may be drifting slowly OT here..;-)
