Part of the issues you have to deal with is making the complexity work. Yes,
you need several amps, but for a smaller system you should not use a stack of
amps, but rather put them all into the same enclosure. There are such amps
around. Genelec for instance build their amps into the speaker cabinette for
all but the biggest boxes. That works since you hook up power and signal and
away you go. It is possible to DIY. The old speaker with passive crossover and
big fat amp type of systems is stone-age. You get better sound and dynamics
with an active setup.
