Actually, I do a lot of 3D animation and in several programs you can create
a virtual spotlight with a negative intensity setting. Point the spot at
something and it removes light. It's great for tweaking hot spots and things
like that. You can also do crazy things like have lights that don't cast
shadows, or that cast shadows in a color different than the light itself.
