I agree that switching to a web-based forum probably wouldn't work in
reality simply because a number of people would refuse to move to it,
and there would be a split.
However in answer to Paul's question: I'd use it. No doubt about that. I
personally so, so much prefer using a web-based forum. One I use very
reguarly looks like this: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/ (not at all
synth DIY related, but for people like me who drive a modified VW) and I
quite dislike email-based lists after having used that forum for a
while. There is a collection of lots of good little things that kind of
come together to make the forum what it is: every subject is kept
neatly in its own topic folder, and this way of doing things is very
nice IMHO. Also seems so much easier to search through. It's great to
only have to find a topic page, and then everything posted relating to
it is kept neatly within it. The ability to share pictures very easily.
The way everything is presented. The personal touch that individual
image signatures have. And so on.
I don't like gimmicks such as html-enabled emails and I do believe
simplicity is the key, but web-based forums make a lot of sense to me.
If one for SDIY was set up then I'd use it immediately and I'd gladly
help out if I could by contributing/moderating/etc.
What I will say though is that there are many, many horribly designed
forum sites that are plain awful to use. Something like the format of
the one above however is a pleasure to use.
Trev (a bit drunk since I'm celebrating my second redundancy in eight
months and how shit my career seems to be going so far, hence this
probably makes no sense).
