Yep... you're wrong :^P
As long as you have enough supply voltage to forward bias all the LEDs
it works fine. I'm using ordinary red LEDs matched at 250uA fro forward voltage drop (to two decimal places ie. 1.67V).
prepare NOT to be overwhelmed.... but I notice that at high currents
(when the LED is visibly conducting) the Q of the circuit goes DOWN...
which is unusual. I can't explain this behavior...
