[sdiy] desperately seeking synthesis

i have almost completed my first project, a very, very ugly stompbox for
my gutiar, and i am looking for another more complex project that is still
simple enough to build as a relative beginner. i'm looking for something
i can build that is synthesis related, but not a full synthesizer. perhaps
a noise-box or vocoder? any suggestions would be appreciated.
