I have clear heat shrink tubing... and I use those Brady brand adhesive
wire markers (with letters and numbers).  You can put the adhesive tag on
the wire, then put clear shrink tubing over it.   Works very well.

The Brady wire markers don't hold up incredibly well without something over
them, so the shrink tubing is pretty important
