I actually tried, but I couldn't really find much in the way of
disadvantages. 

Generally using a pot in unusual ways is bad form because it requires
that you assume the pot is perfect, and of course it's not.
Especially the connection between the wiper and the resistor element.

But here, if the connection between the wiper and the resistor element
is intermittent the gain just snaps to 1.  That's not awful.
