I think the backplane idea might get expensive in the long run. What about
.100 spacing double row headers and ribbon cable?  Obviously you need to
use gold pins and sockets to avoid long term problems.  I know there have
been some famous synths with ***BAD*** ribbon cable issues, but I think a
high quality connector would hold up fine.  

Anyone have problems with gold plated headers?  All of mine have been
trouble free so far.
