Here is a trick an old fart taught me years ago before
I became an old fart:

When unsoldering with braid, as you touch the iron tip
to the braid, take the end of the braid that you are
holding and wrap it over the top of the tip. This
increases the heat transfer into the braid and makes
for quicker desoldering.

Another thick I use: before desoldering with braid,
re-solder the joint with fresh solder. This may sound
counter-intuitive, but this cleans up the old oxidized
solder, and pre-heats the joint. 

Also, applying extra flux helps.
