I know this effect being referred to as the "Bermuda triangle".

THere are people here in Germany who live by the maxim: "There is a 
sucker born every day." That explains why even re-labelled 12AX7 (they 
relabel them as ECC803S, a long-life version but otherwise similar) 
often reach prices of $750 or more. Ebay of course. I have seen *dead* 
tubes that still reached insane prices.... The most incredible thing 
I've seen was an "original vintage FM receiver". (claimed to be from the 
1920s, yeah right, sure.... Any idea when FM was introduced?!?!).

It will crash some day, just like the stock market. Same effect. If 
everyone is buying the same stock it goes up. Until people realise that 
it is overrated, and start to sell....
