I agree with you - maybe I just dislike the layout
of this particular PCB. In this context I consider
this a bad idea to point at.

Basically yes, but although your PCB is very much
more complex you managed to keep your connector's
layout much more cleaner. Maybe that's the point.

Meanwhile I'm pretty sure that that depends on
it's application.
Generally I go with Colin's attitude to avoid
wiring as much as possible.
I had a deeper look at different synth modules
meanwhile and it appears to me that small units
like Oakleys or MOTMs can be held clean easier
with using solid wire.
OTOH some pictures of MOTM modules show twisted
stranded wires which is another approach.
In case of rather large and monolithic PCBs (like
the SMB1 you showed) stranded wire and a good
layout of the connectors is unavoidable.
