If you're not set on using C++, I suggest trying Keykit, an object
oriented freeware language specifically designed for midi music programming.
The download comes with a huge variety of tools including algorithmic
composition.  A example of the power a program written in Keykit is
Geomaestro, a truly amazing and mind bending algorithmic composition tool
that uses virtual movement of a point among lines and geometric patterns to
create notes and midi controller messages.  The links for Keykit and
