I started to write a long reply to this, but realized that it was getting
way too lengthy. I'll just say that some people have done quite well
pursuing what interested them in life, and not even finishing college. Two
prominent examples: Bill Gates and Michael Dell

To find an answer to your personal questions, I suppose you might ask
yourself:

"If I pursued only what interested me, could I reasonably expect to prosper
financially? If so, could I expect that prosperity to last over a long period?"

If so, then perhaps you should go for it.
