I'm going out on a limb here and doing some pure speculation. The
transformers used in audio pre- amps are selected for the "best behavior"
possible. (Whatever that might be in the eyes of the designer.)
I suspect that using a transformer that would normally be considered
"totally inappropriate" for the given application, might just bring out a
lot more of the distortion and coloration you are looking for. However, I
haven't a clue as to which "totally inappropriate" transformer style would
come closest to giving you the results you want.
