Couldn't it be distorsion from the mic itself? If I were to guess, I
would say that dynamic mic distorsion would look like that. A membrane
reaching a full stop of some kind, then the coil current drops
exponentially. Dynamic microphones use a coil, don't they?
Thunder blasts are fairly loud, at least when nearby, and with a
powerful low-register content. So it should easily overdrive a simple
microphone.
