I'm not sure if it's the same as what you're talking about, but how 
about something like a 4x4 panel mount "socket block connector 
thing" and then use individual pins or sockets on cables. Maybe 
standardize on in/out/modulation positions on the connector 
because labeling would be tough. 
I think these connectors are used for power a lot.
I don't know if I'm making any sense.
