         I always wondered how they made the barrels...the 1816 musket I 
have has a hole in it big enough for a 69 caliber ball.  When I found 
out...which is to say they would take a hot piece of iron, and wrap it 
round a mandrel and weld it together by beating it...I lost my enthusiasm 
for attempting to get the gun in a condition where it could be fired...I 
lost all confidence that it would ever survive a charge of gun powder.
