Something that I find very useful, is some stuff
(I suspect it is a suspension of carborundum grit in oil)
that increases the friction between the screwdriver and 
the head by at least 5 times. I've been able to remove
philips screws with  almost completly worn heads with 
this! and even better, avoided damagingthem in the first place.
A mechanic thinks 'valve grinding paste' might do the job, too.

In Australia, it is sold by auto mechanic places, it is by
the same company that make the 'recoil' cylinder block
thread replacement system.
