I've used the paper method for about 6 or 7 years now.
Only had problems when not using the right glue.
Good quality "rubber cement" spray (like 3M permanent mounting spray)
applied to both sides last a long time,
at least double the 3 years you mention.
Then again in hot or humid conditions the result may be less durable.
