If you'll all pardon my gross niavete, I wonder why we would
desire a multi-user OS in the first place? Multitasking, perhaps,
but I don't see much use for the multi-user part. To my
understanding, something like a synth or an effect is application
intensive and the more cycles that can be devoted to it the
better. So to me, the OS is a rather diminuitive aspect and
something like (oh do pardon me) DOS might, in fact, be a good
idea. Even the time of day clock interrupt could be eliminated
so as not to be interrupting the application. What sort of "OS"
is used by Nord? If the idea is to get as much out of the CPU
as possible, doesn't it make sense to make the appication itself
bootable? When you get into small program space, such as is
available with RAM cards of whatever sort, doesn't it make sense
to either eliminate or diminish the OS to a simple loader? For
our musical application use, it might be best to write something
that is specifically optimized for this highly specialized purpose.
DOS might, in fact, be a good place to start experimenting because
it doesn't get in the way very much. Perhaps at least "proof of
concept" could be accomplished therein. Then again, it might seem
as if what I suggest points back to using a DSP, perhaps with a
"side car" CPU to load it's RAM for more flexibility.

The flame retardant suit has been donned. Rotten tomatoes are
one thing, but those rotten eggs are really nasty...

- Hydrogen is pointless without solar.
- Good or bad, that which gets rewarded, gets done.
- What good are laws that only lawyers understand?
- The media's credibility should always be questioned.
- Governments do nothing well, save collect taxes.
